Chlef is a green city in the northern part of Algeria and is the capital of the province of Chlef, named as the city. Chlef is situated on a valley extending between the two mountains and is surrounded by agricultural land and wooded areas. The city, which was formerly known as Orleansville, named after the longest river in the country in 1980, after the end of the colonial period.

The city of Chlef is under the influence of the Mediterranean climate zone. The summers are hot and dry, while the winters are cool, humid and rainy. Temperatures are measured around 30 degrees Celsius in July and August, the hottest period of the year. April, May, September and October are considered to be the best time to visit the city.

Transportation in the city is provided by buses and taxis. It is advised that tourists be cautious about taxi fares. The transportation from the city to the distant places is carried out by the railway network and the Chlef International Airport. French is widely spoken among local people in the city of Chlef, while English is less known.

There are some historic ruins in the city that must be seen. A basilica with valuable mosaic motifs from the 5th century is among them. The Chlef Mosque deserves to be seen as one of the architectural icons of the city.

Cuisine in Chlef is based on spicy dishes and the main ingredient is usually meat. Tea is highly consumed and there are many tea houses in the city.
