About El Salvador

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America in terms of land area. It shares land borders with Honduras to the north and Guatemala to the west, while the Pacific Ocean lies to its south.
El Salvador sustains its economy by exporting products like coffee and cotton to the U.S. The people of El Salvador rely on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods but face economic challenges due to an underdeveloped industry. As a result of these difficult living conditions, approximately 25% of the country's population has migrated to the United States and now resides there.
The country experiences a milder climate in its central regions, transitioning to a hotter climate as you move southward. From May to October, El Salvador receives heavy rainfall and lower temperatures, while the rest of the year has extreme heat and drought.
The capital city, San Salvador, is the focal point of tourism in El Salvador. It features a large natural reserve with diverse wildlife and facilities for water sports enthusiasts.
Santa Ana, known for its renowned El Salvadoran coffee production, offers tours of its coffee factories and is home to the captivating Coatepeque Lake. The Balls of Fire Festival, held at the end of August each year, is a century-old tradition that commemorates a volcanic eruption from the past. Participants prepare for this event two months in advance, creating balls of fire by wrapping cloth tightly and drenched in gasoline. The festival is closely monitored by the police due to safety precautions, creating a unique experience for attendees, who feel as if they are in the midst of a volcanic explosion.
In November, the Carnival of San Miguel, considered sacred by the people of El Salvador, features reggae, samba, funky, and merengue music by artists alongside street dancers, creating a lively performance display.
Pupusa, a popular dish in El Salvador, is a stuffed flatbread typically filled with cheese, beans, and meat, making it a flavorful and memorable culinary experience. Given that pupusas often contain pork, vegetarians can also find options to suit their preferences in the country's diverse cuisine.
