The city of Sharq El Owainat, which is located in the New Valley region of Egypt, lies between the River Nile and Libya on the south-western side of the country. Sharq El Owainat and Toshka are the stakeholders of the New Valley Project which is carried out for the construction of the water-carrying ducts through Lake Nasser in order to irrigate the Western Desert in Egypt.
It is aimed to decrease the crowd in the valley settlement around the River Nile and establish the Western Desert as a new settlement for future generations thanks to this project, which has been carried out within the scope of Hosni Mubarak's election campaigns. High-income products are mainly exported to Europe in this city where different agricultural enterprises are run. There is also a livestock slaughterhouse and a meat packing unit in the city, which has a hospital, police station, telephone lines, and television transmission.
