The city of Luleå, in the northeast of Sweden, is located on the northern coasts of the Baltic Sea and in the south of the Arctic Circle. Moreover, Luleå, being the administrative center of the county of Norrbotten, was established as a Scandinavian port in the 13th century. Gammelstad, which is the former city center, is among the places included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO. In the city, the cathedral building that was demolished following the fire in 1887 and reconstructed, is the highest structure of the city with a height of 67 meters.

Located on the coasts of the Gulf of Bothnia in the north of the Baltic Sea, the city is known as the fifth biggest port of Sweden. Because the gulf is frozen during the winter months, ships travel with ice breakers. Luleå has a cold climate. Summers are short and cool, and winters are long and cold. The formation of permanent snow layers provides little milder weather due to the Gulf Stream. The highest temperature value observed in the city is approximately 20 degrees in July while the lowest temperature value is -13 degrees as observed in January.
