About Vigo

Vigo is a port city in the Galician Autonomous Region, located on the north-west of Spain. It is situated on a bay near the Atlantic Ocean, on the border with Portugal. Galician is spoken as much as Spanish among the locals.

Vigo is at the crossroads of two separate climatic zones. Although the surrounding areas are considered under the influence of the Mediterranean climate, the weather zone of the city is considered to be closer to the oceanic climate because of the abundant rainfall year-round, which is decreasing in the summer months. On the other hand, the temperature in Vigo is above the average temperature expected from the oceanic climate year round.

The city is seen as the locomotive of the economy and industry in the Galician Autonomous Region. There are a variety of economic activities in Vigo ranging from fishery to tourism, and from industry to commerce. Europe's largest fishing port and the world's largest fishing company is located in Vigo. Vigo harbor is more than 20 kilometers long and is constantly welcoming freight ships.

In addition to being a trading harbor town, Vigo has also a quiet seaside town atmosphere. There are beautiful beaches in the city where you can sunbath. Samil Beach, Carril Beach, Canido Beach and Vao Beach are some of these. In addition, sailing is considered an important sporting event in the city.

Transportation within the city is mainly provided by buses. It is possible to reach the neighboring cities by ferries. Portugal and various Spanish cities can be reached by railway. Vigo's gateway to the world is Vigo-Peinador International Airport. There are regular flights to important destinations such as Lisbon, Paris, Milan, Rome and London, as well as domestic flights operated from the airport.

Vigo has a variety of museums based on different themes ranging from communication to environmentalism, from arts to the sea. The place frequented by shopping freaks is Principe Street. It can be said that the city has two separate centers. The region, called Casco Vello, is hosting the historic old town. This is an area to walk in to get to know Vigo's history with its stone houses and narrow streets. Porta do Sol reflects Vigo's modern face. This is a very lively and vibrant area where shops, bazaars, cafés and restaurants are located.

The Castro region is a mirror of the history of Vigo. Celtic and ancient Roman walls and Castro Castle built in the 17th century to protect the city from Portugal and its allies are located here.

The Cies Islands, a natural park area, can be reached in about 45 minutes by ferry. Ticket prices are 16 euros for the roundtrip. Here you can enjoy wonderful beaches, hike, dive, and observe bird species. There are several restaurants and bars on the island as well as hotels for your accommodation.

Visitors of Vigo are suggested to taste a variety of seafood and a local alcoholic drink called queimaday in the restaurants in the port.

Transportation to Vigo City Center from Airport

Vigo Airport

Vigo Airport, located in Galicia on the northeast coast of Spain, is 9km away from Vigo city centre and 28km from the city of Pontevedra. To reach Vigo city centre from the airport you can use buses, rent a car, or take a taxi. It takes 10-15 minutes to reach the city centre by car.

Bus

The L9A bus line that takes you from Vigo Airport to the city centre goes from Vigo Airport to Eugenio Fadrique. There are buses leaving daily every hald and hour starting from 6:00 in the morning to 23:00 at night, and reaches the city centre in around 15 minutes. The bus fare is 1.35 euro, as of 2018, and the last stop is the Eugenio Fadrique Plaza.

Taxi

It’s possible to find taxis waiting just in front of the arrivals terminal in Vigo Airport, but there are also some desks for private taxi companies such Troncoso Bernardez Santiago (+34986253117) and Gonzalez Perez Teodomiro (+34986237008). A taxi to Viga city centre from the airport should set you back somewhere between 14-18 euro. You can also take a taxi to reach the other cities; this would cost you around 35 euro to Pontevedro, and 90 euro to Orense. In addition you can go to the towns of Mos and Redondela for 17-18 euro. The fare rate of taxis from Vigo Airport is usually 0.85 per km.  

Car Rental

If you want to hire a car from Vigo Airport then you can to Atesa, Avis, Europcar, or Hertz offices in the terminal and get some information about prices. It’s also possible do some research yourself and make a reservation beforehand. It’s likely that it would take you around 10-15 minutes to reach Vigo city centre once you’ve picked up your rental car.
