About Stavanger

To the west of Norway, on the North Sea coast, the port city of Stavanger is the fourth largest city in the country and is called the 'energy capital'. With its rich oil deposits in the North Sea being discovered and processed in 1969, it has become one of the most important oil cities in the world. Prior to the petroleum industry, the city, known as the fishing and canning center, was the largest sardine fish supplier in Europe in the 1900s; but production and operations in this area is stopped in time. The last factory in the fishing industry was closed in 2002. The largest production facility near the harbor continues its existence today as the Conservation Museum.

Stavanger, a developed industrial city with major oil platforms and related industries, is also attractive with its historical and natural texture peculiar to Norway. There is a large artificial lake in the center of the city. The park, named after the Norwegian poet Alexander Kielland, is the oldest park in the city. Gamle Stavanger, the historic part of Stavanger, hosts wooden houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The city, which is also a frequent destination for major cruise ships, also hosts major tourist destinations such as the Stavanger Church, the Petroleum Museum, the Conservation Museum, the Rogaland Museum of Art and Tungenes Lighthouse. Stokkavatnet and Preikestolen are interesting natural formations near the city. The city, with its temperate climate effects, is windy and rainy throughout the year. Stavanger Airport is 11 kilometers southwest of the city.
