About Plovdiv

Plovdiv, second largest city of Bulgaria, is known as one of the oldest settlements with its 8.000 year long history. The name of the city comes from Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great. Take it from Filip. Plovdiv sits on seven hills. Nowadays one of them is used as a stone quarry, so there are six hills as Dzhendem Tepe (Youth Hill), Bunarzhik Tepe (The Liberators Hill), Sahat Tepe (Danov Hill), Taksim Tepe, Nebet Tepe and Dzhambaz Tepe. The city hosts quite colorful buildings, Turkish baths, lush green parks and lively streets. Stefan Stambolov Square, which is considered as the center of the city, is visited by many tourists every year. The Ottoman Quarter, one of Plovdiv's major tourist attractions, is well preserved. Sahat Tepe from the 16th century and the 2.000-year-old Roman Antique Theater built in the beginning of the second century by Trajan are among the most important architectural monuments. In addition, the church of Sveti Bogoroditsa, the Bachkovo Monastery, the Roman Forum, Cumayata Square and the Friday Mosque all have a remarkable architecture.

Plovdiv is an agricultural zone with temperate climate. The winters are cold and rainy and the summers are hot and arid. Since the city is by the Maritsa, rowing competitions are organized. People can also go for fishing. The city has a very lively night life. Many nightclubs and bars are located in the center of the city. It takes about 20 minutes to travel from Krumovo airport to the city center by taxi service, which provided by four different companies.
