Kyoto, the capital of Japan Empire before Tokyo, is the 3rd largest city in the country. Kyoto, the largest city in the metropolitan area formed by the Kobe-Osaka-Kyoto trio, is also known as the "City with Thousand Temple". It is even reported that American planes did not bomb Kyoto in World War II because of these temples.
