About Kalamata

Located in southern Greece, Kalamata is a lesser-known tourist destination, making it the ideal place for a peaceful holiday in Greece. You can enjoy the sand and sea at the beach, feast on delicious fresh Aegean flavors, and have fun at the lively taverns in the evening. The city is located approximately 240 km from the capital, Athens. Places to visit in the city include the Kalamata Castle, the Old Town, which is located around the Castle, the Church of the Ypapanti, which was consecrated in 1873, and the Agios Ioannis church. Other attractions include the Town Hall, Gallery of Contemporary Greek Art, Archaeological Museum of Messenia, King George Square, and the Folk Art Museum.

Known for its olive trees and olive oil, this port city features a 4km stretch of pristine, blue flag beaches as well as vibrant taverns, cafes, bars, and clubs that line the shore. You should also visit some of the other beautiful beaches located a little further outside of the city. If you have time, visit the beaches at Verga, which is 8 km from the city, Mikri Mandineia, which is 10 km from the city, or Avia, which is 12 km from the city. The ruins of Ancient Messene are also worth a visit.

The city has a fairly small airport that mainly serves seasonal international flights. Another option would be flying into other cities in Greece, like Athens, and taking a domestic flight to Kalamata. You can reach the city center from the airport by taxi or car. We recommend booking taxis in advance. Also, there is a bus stop outside of the airport that provides transportation to the city.  

Transportation to Kalamata City Center from Airport

You can use the taxis and buses for a short transportation to the city center from Kalamata Airport. Taxi fares are not too high in the region, and these vehicles provide convenience especially for the passengers with heavy luggage. The buses, on the other hand, provide a more budget-friendly travel to the center from Kalamata Airport compared to taxis. However, they do not offer service at frequent intervals. In addition, it is possible to travel from Kalamata Airport to the city center and other nearby places by taxi at late hours.

After landing at Kalamata Airport, you can travel to the center by getting on a taxi in front of the terminal both during the day and at night. The cost of traveling to the city center from the airport by taxi is around 20-25 Euro. If you want to learn the taxi fare that you will pay in advance and then make a choice between bus or taxi, you can get information from the taxi drivers in front of the Kalamata Airport.

Bus

Visitors, who come to Kalamata Airport, can travel to the city center by bus in a little longer time but with a less budget-friendly vehicle. Buses usually offer service in the city center during the day. They generally do not depart at frequent intervals. Therefore, visitors, who do not want to wait, can travel to the center with other alternative vehicles such as taxis. The cost of traveling from Kalamata Airport to the center by bus is 2 Euro per passenger. Since this is a more affordable option, you can use buses to reach your destination. However, if you prefer a more comfortable travel, you can get on a taxi.
