About Gwadar Intl. Airport
The former Gwadar Airport (GWD), which had been the primary aviation facility serving the Gwadar region in Pakistan, underwent a significant transition around 2018. It was succeeded by the New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA), marking a shift towards a more modern and capable airport.
The transition suggests that the old Gwadar Airport operated on a limited scale, potentially having less capacity to handle larger aircraft and accommodate a growing volume of passengers compared to the NGIA.
New Gwadar International Airport, located approximately 26 km northeast of the existing airport in Gwadar City, Balochistan, Pakistan, is a crucial component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Envisioned as a major trade and transportation hub, the airport is currently under construction and is expected to be one of the largest in Pakistan upon completion.
Funded by a grant from China, the project is managed and operated by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA). The airport's design includes a modern terminal building, a 3658m long runway, advanced air traffic control systems, cargo facilities, and various other amenities.
Gwadar International Airport plays a pivotal role in the development of the Gwadar Port and the overall success of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. It is anticipated to facilitate economic growth by enhancing trade, tourism, and investment opportunities in the Gwadar region. Moreover, the airport's strategic location is expected to improve regional connectivity, linking Pakistan more efficiently with the Middle East, Central Asia, and other regions.
