About Alor Island

Alor Island is located at the eastern Lesser Sunda Islands, which stretch out along southeast Indonesia. According to the 2010 census it had a population of 145 thousand. Kalabahi, the only town on Alor Island, has a metropolitan population of approximately 60 thousand. Considering the size and location of Kalabahi, the range of products obtained is quite surprising. Alor Island has a volcanic basis and rough terrain. Kalabahi is the only flat area on the island, which was built in 1911 and features the region’s main port. Alor Island is known as the best place to go snorkeling or scuba diving in Indonesia but because the currents are so strong it is recommended that you go diving with an experienced diver.

The island’s infrastructure is quite weak and the island residents are generally engaged in agriculture. The government has expressed their desire to change this with the help of international organizations. The island’s villages cultivate vanilla, tamarind, almond, and hazelnut and sandalwood is cut for trade in the forests.
