About Alamogordo

Alamogordo is a small settlement located in the US State of New Mexico. It is situated in the Tularosa Basin, with the Sacramento Mountains bordering it to the east. It is the commercial and industrial center of Otero County. Alamogordo doesn’t have a lot of manufacturing, rather the service and retail industries drive the economy, as well as its developing tourism industry.

The city was founded by Charles Bishop Eddy in 1898 and grew rapidly after the railway network was connected to the city. Eddy designed Alamogordo with wide streets and trees surrounding the irrigation canals. The city received its name, which means ‘large cottonwood’ in Spanish, from Charles Eddy’s brother, John Arthur Eddy. The US Army’s first nuclear test, the Trinity test, took place nearby in the Jornado del Muerto Desert on July 16th, 1945. A month later the bomb used in the Trinity test was detonated over Nagasaki, Japan. There are many important US military facilities close to Alamogordo like the White Sands Space Harbor, which is a space shuttle runway used for educational purposes by NASA to test various rocket researching and the Holloman Air Force Base, which is home to a large aircraft fleet.

Among the city’s major attractions are the White Sands National Monument, which is the largest gypsum dune field in the world, Lake Lucero, New Mexico Museum of Space History, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, The International Space Hall of Frame, Toy Train Depot, and the Alamogordo Museum of History.  Alamgordo has a steepe-climate and receives a small amount of rainfall throughout the year.
