About Abu Musa Island

Abu Musa, a city in the Hormozgan Province of Iran, is an island city located to the east of Basra Bay.

Abu Musa, was left to the administration of the United Arab Emirates in 1971 after a fifty years British rule, was occupied by Iran in the same year. The island, which is in a very important geopolitical position, still causes diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

Abu Musa is a 12-square-kilometer-wide island and home to a population of about two thousand people. Under the influence of warm and humid climate, the temperature is around 20-22 degrees Celsius even in winter. In the summer, this value can reach 40 degrees Celsius. Even though the humidity is high all year round, rainfall is only seen in winter months.

Land in Abu Musa is not suitable for agriculture; fishing is the basic livelihood source for the local people in the island. On the other hand, Abu Musa has one of the major oil ports of Iran.

Jame Mosque, decorated with blue tile and a blue dome, is one of the architectural symbols of Abu Musa. There is also an amusement park on the island. Transportation to the city is provided by Abu Musa Airport.
